Connected by the Suwannee River
Connected by the Suwannee River is a community mural created by the Our Community Cares Coalition (OCCC) at Wayside Park in White Springs, Florida. Originally conceived as a youth engagement project during OCCC's annual TriCounty Race, the mural transformed a frequently targeted graffiti site into a vibrant public art installation that celebrates the region's natural beauty, shared heritage, and strong community connections.
Led by OCCC Founding Chair Befaithful Coker, the project began in October 2025 and is ongoing. The mural highlights the many ways residents and visitors experience the Suwannee River, from outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship to community gatherings and cultural traditions. Through colorful imagery, life-sized caricatures, and interactive elements, the mural tells the story of how Columbia, Hamilton, and Suwannee counties are connected by the river that has shaped their history and identity.
The installation also honors community leaders, public officials, organizations, and local partners whose contributions have helped preserve and promote the Suwannee River and the communities it serves. Sensory art features, QR codes, and tagging provide visitors with opportunities to learn more about the people, places, and history represented throughout the mural.
As part of its ongoing commitment to Wayside Park, OCCC adopted the park and enhanced the site with additional public art installations, decorated picnic tables, landscaping improvements, and flower beds. Together, these efforts have transformed the park into a welcoming destination that celebrates art, culture, history, and the enduring connection between the people of the Suwannee River region.
